In Honor of Giancarlo Mazzoli on his 70th Birthday
Proceedings of the “IX Giornata Ghisleriana di Filologia classica”
(Pavia, October 22, 2010)
Edited by Fabio Gasti
English Abstract
“Giornate Ghisleriane di Filologia classica” is an event that annually the Collegio
Ghislieri in Pavia organized in collaboration with the Studi Umanistici Department of
Pavia University to discuss on various arguments related to the cultural and literary
history of classical Antiquity. This book contains the proceedings of the ninth edition of
“Giornate”, organized in November 2010 and offered to Giancarlo Mazzoli, professor
of Latin Literature at the Pavia University, celebrating his seventy years, forty years
after publication of his book Seneca e la poesia and twenty from the meeting at the
Fondation Hardt when he returned to consider the problem.
The meeting, with italian and foreign specialists of Seneca, has provided a wide and
updated survey of many aspects. In particular, the contributions range in several
directions: Seneca’s poetry in the context of literary trends in the Neronian age and of
original interpretation of Stoic philosophy, Seneca’s critical evaluations on genres or
authors of the two classical literatures, presence of Greek and Latin authors in Seneca’s
works (quotations or intertextual allusions), Seneca prose writer (with particulary
regard to its rhetoric and stylistic performances) and drama writer.
Fabio Gasti is Professor of Late Latin Literature and the History of Latin Language at
the University of Pavia. His particular interest lies in the investigation of the
relationship between pagan and Christian culture in late Antiquity. He is author of
numerous publications on Isidorus and on the poetry of the 5th and 6th centuries A.D.;
recently he translated and edited a commentary edition of book 11 of Isidore’s
Etimologies (Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 2010) and of book 8 of Augustine’s Confessions
(Venezia, Marsilio, 2012). By Pavia University Press he just published Profilo storico
della Letteratura tardolatina (2013).
